Deanna wants to discuss stress levels

 We’re getting toward the end of our semester and with that comes the stress of assignments and exams! What are some ways that you deal with the stress of school work? And does it help? Also if one of your students ever came up to you and told you that he/she was feeling stressed, what is something you would do as a teacher to help?

  1. This has been a stressful semester so far with everything that I have going on from my classes, observations, and work. One way that I deal with my stress is taking a step back and figuring out what the root of my stress is. Most times my stress is that I have a lot of work to get done. Then I create a to-do list of the work that I need to do so I could visualize what I need to do. If I'm stressed out by the work load then I break up the work into chunks and I start doing the work. Another way that I deal with stress is by taking a break and doing something that I enjoy. I think that it's very important to treat ourselves and I usually treat myself in different ways. I might do something relaxing, watch a TV show, or go out. In my opinion it's very important to clear our minds when we are feeling overwhelmed because this helps us become more focused when we get back to work. If a student came up to me because they were feeling stressed I would take some time to listen to them. By letting the student know that they are heard, I'm letting them know that their worries are important to me. I would try to see how I could help relieve their stress. Whether it is by clarifying their questions or by giving them extra time to work on something. I never want to be the teacher that creates stress in my students so I think that by being flexible I could help in that regard. --Adelkis

    I can't believe how quickly this semester is flying by! With schoolwork, observations, and working, I have missed how quickly things are moving. I have found the best way to handle all the work this semester is to take it day by day and work at larger assignments in pieces. I added all my assignments to an app at the beginning of the semester using my syllabi, including due dates. I know my assignments due each week and if it is something time-consuming that causes me some stress, I make sure to start on that early. I find it helps me a lot to get a hold of my work, instead of letting everything pile up. Also, if I am especially reticent to work on something, I make sure I am comfortable and I will listen to music or watch something as I work. As a teacher, I will try to help young students develop skills that will help make work easier - personal responsibility, time management, and other things like that. I also hope that my students feel comfortable enough to tell me if something is difficult or they are feeling stressed/falling behind/etc. If this happens, I will take some free time to help that student develop a schedule to break down the work into easier pieces. I may also decide to extend a deadline or lessen the workload for students if I have given an assignment that was too difficult for the class and their abilities at that time. I never want the work I give students to make them feel overwhelmed or add tons of unnecessary stress. I hope to be a teacher who makes students comfortable and excited to learn.

  3. In order to help manage my stress with assignments and exams I find it helpful to make a list of all of my assignments that are left for the semester. This helps me to stay organized and know what is due, but it also feels relieving to check off the things that I have done. I also like to plan ahead and dedicate time for big papers and exams so that it is not as overwhelming. If one of my students told me they were feeling stressed , I would help them to break up their assignments into smaller parts so that it does not seem as overwhelming. I think it is also important for students to understand that it is good to take breaks sometimes.
