Deanna is interested in decisions we have made

One thing I always find interesting about a teacher is how/when they realized that teaching was going to be their profession. When did you realize that you wanted to be a teacher? Were your friends and family supportive of this career decision?  Was there a particular teacher who influenced you along the way?

I find that interesting, too! I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. In my basement, my dad used chalkboard paint to make me a little area of the wall to write with chalk and I would use older cousins' school old workbooks, loose leaf paper, and other leftover supplies to create a little classroom for my younger siblings. I created a class list with classroom job assignments, graded fake quizzes and homework, and taught lessons. As such, my family and friends are very supportive of this career decision. They always say how perfect it is for me and how excited they are that I knew what I wanted to do so early in life. I was lucky to have many great teachers throughout my time in school and the really important ones, I still talk about. One was my first grade teacher Miss Sheehan who treated me as an equal, though I was only about seven at the time. We talked about our families and how much we both loved sushi and she became one of my favorite people. I haven't seen her in a long time, but I still think about her from time to time and I hope I am that special to the students I have in the coming years.

  2. I love this question! From a young age I always said that I wanted to become a teacher but it wasn't until high school that I became firm in my decision. My sophomore year of high school I got the opportunity to tutor first grade students who were struggling with reading. I realized that I enjoyed working with children and it felt nice being able to help them. When I told my parents that I wanted to become a teacher they were really supportive about my decision. There aren't any teachers in my family so this career choice is exciting for them and I hope to make them proud. Through out my years as a student I've encountered many teachers that have positively influenced me. One of those teachers was my high school history teacher, Mr. Caruso. We were his first students/ class and despite it being his first year he did a great job. Everyone liked Mr. Caruso because of his ability to relate to the students. He became that teacher that students would go to whenever they were having an issue. Also, he always made sure that his lessons were fun, interactive, and informative. I remember when I had him again for AP history, we were learning about the roaring 20s and prohibition. One day we get to class and discover that he has turned the classroom into a speakeasy(secret club). It was those experiences that really inspired me to want to become a teacher and create positive memories for children to remember their whole lives.

  3. I realized I wanted to be a teacher my junior year of high school after I spent the whole summer volunteering at my town's extended school year summer program. I had always enjoyed working with children, but after being in the classroom setting and working one-on-one with students, that is when I decided I wanted to be a teacher. My friends and family all agreed that it was a great decision and that it is something that I enjoy doing and would make me happy. My cooperating teacher that summer heavily influenced my decision because seeing the way the students looked up to her and how happy she was coming to work everyday made me realize that was what I wanted to do.

Eleanor wants us to think deeply about the semester.

We are finishing up our observation hours in the next couple of weeks.  I remember my first prompt, I was amazed at how quickly September ...
